Letters of three famous musicians of the 19th century, 1825-1845.

One autograph letter each by Beethoven, Mendelssohn, and Wagner, bound in a volume with an elaborately decorated green morocco binding and ivory miniatures of the three composers laid in on the front pastedown. The binding is by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. Each letter is accompanied by a translation and a biographical sketch of the composer. Beethoven's letter, to Charles Neate, involves negotiations concerning delivery and payment for his "Galitzin" quartets, Op. 127, 130, and 132. Mendelssohn's letter, to an unnamed councilman, regretfully declines a conducting engagement. Wagner's letter, to his friend Karl Gaillard (music critic of the Berliner Musikalische Zeitung), describes the warm reception of Wagner's opera Tannhäuser in Dresden. The volume is housed in a half green morocco slipcase with a fleece lining. Laid in is an issue of the Cornell University Music Review, v. 6 (1963), which includes an article on this volume by Harold E. Samuel.
